Teacher union unveils reform plan
Hartford, Conn. (WTNH – The state’s largest teacher union is proposing a faster way to get rid of poor teachers. It’s just one of many proposals aimed at the upcoming Education Reform General Assembly session that starts next month. These proposals include a push for all-day kindergarten, universal pre- kindergarten, something advocated by Governor Malloy, and a change in teacher tenure. [Read the proposal here] Bob Wyllie has been a teacher in East Hampton for 26 years. “Tenure is not a guarantee of a job, matter of fact, the law itself is called the The Fair Dismissal Law and it lays out a process on how a teacher is let go,” Wyllie explained. “What we’re suggesting is we make modifications to that in order to shorten the process to make it more cost effective and to really tie it more closely to evaluations and high standards,” said Mary Loftus Levine from the Connecticut Education Association.
