Pursuing Professional Organization Prizes and National Recognition

I’ll own up to being quite cynical about prizes and recognition from professional organizations. On the face of it, these endeavors are sometimes about a mutual regard society, in which the universities and colleges affirm the professional organization, and vice versa. They are about a superficial aspect of work that takes place long after the project has been delivered. These bring PR into play, with the packaging of the course developed for an external audience of administrators (who have varying understandings of pedagogy and technologies and assessments).

For the professional organizations, these contests encourage some of the hard work of creating works that may be state-of-the-art, and it may enable such organizations to show that they’re actually quite progressive and have members who are evolving the field. The

Online Learning Offering Students Another Choice

With the sluggish economy not improving as quickly as once hoped, college graduates are weary of the uncertain job market and perhaps their choice to attend a traditional four year college or university. Will Former Employer Say Bad Things?

I was terminated from my previous job. Could my ex-employer say any negative things that will reflect on my chances on getting a job?

The Career Doctor responds:

Possible? Yes. Likely? No.

That said, most employers will state that you were terminated, and some may state whether you were fired for cause or simply terminated so, you need to face the fact that in many cases, a prospective new employer may very well know you were fired.

But I think you need to spend less time worrying about what a former employer might say about you and more time on how you are dealing with being fired and what you have learned from the experience.

From my work with job-seekers, I know that getting terminated whether for cause or downsized is tough on the ego, so you need to pick yourself up off the ground, shake off the termination, and go right back out there and seek new employment.

Occupy Wall Street—the ongoing movement being held by protesters in the Wall Street financial district of New York City to protest and raise awareness of social and economic inequality in the United States and around the world—has been happening since the middle of September.

Similar demonstrations are being held in major cities across the U.S. and college students are jumping on the bandwagon to make their voices heard. Outrage over increased tuition and fees, student loan debt, and high unemployment rates are among their concerns.

Occupy Wall Street: An Ongoing Protest

Occupy Wall Street was mainly the brainchild of the non-profit Canadian-based Adbusters Foundation, an anti-consumerist pro-environment organization which began in 1989. The
