Audit: $1 million diverted from NCCU-based program

The former executive director of an education agency based at N.C. Central University diverted more than $1 million into a secret bank account over a six-year period and spent nearly $300,000 of it on herself, according to a state audit released this morning.

Nan Coleman, executive director of the Historically Minority Colleges and University Consortium, was fired in 2009 for poor performance, and university officials ordered an internal audit of the program.

The university handed over the findings of its audit to the state last year.
