Did Broward schools use robocalls to calm parents during lockdown?

UPDATE: 3 p.m. I have heard back from one parent verifying that she received a call from Broward School District headquarters, not just from her school. EARLIER UPDATE: Heard back from Broward School District spokeswoman Nadine Drew. In summary: 1. There were robocalls that came from the district. Not everyone received them. The calls started going out when the lockdown went district-wide (after 10:15 a.m. but before 11:30 a.m.). Once the lockdown was lifted, around 1:15 p.m., the calls stopped. Drew was unable to say how many calls could be made per minute [remember, school offices are closed today]. So apparently some people got them and some didn’t. I still have yet to hear from anyone who received a robocall from the school district. So if you got a call that was from Broward Schools, I’m still waiting to hear from you. 2. Calls are not the only way Broward Schools got the word out. The school district has a Facebook page and a Twitter account. If you have accounts on Facebook and/or Twitter, be sure to connect with the district’s pages. Both promoted the district’s rumor control hotline. Finally, there was the school district’s Web site, which updated its home page with the status of the lockdown. I did hear from one parent who said Hollywood Hills High School’s principal sent a call out when the school went into lockdown and another when it was lifted. ORIGINAL POST: In today’s article on parent reaction to Wednesday’s lockdown, I quoted a mom who was representative of the many, many parents I spoke to about communication issues yesterday. “I would have appreciated having a call from the school finding out the accurate information about what was going on,” said Elisa Friedman Dansky, of Davie, whose daughter is a sophomore at West broward High School in Pembroke Pines. “We get messages all the time from the school and from the district. Tonight when I got home and checked my phone messages, nothing.” I didn’t get a message at home either, despite being married to a teacher and stepdad to a student enrolled in a Broward high school. I spoke to a bunch of parents throughout the day yesterday. No one had received a robocall from the school district. Did anyone? If you did, let me know> You can reach me at rolmeda@sunsentinel.com.
