Letters alert parents on tuberculosis case

CARY — Cary High School administrators and health officials are sending letters home to parents today alerting them about health concerns after a former student contracted tuberculosis.

The student no longer attends the school and the situation is being monitored by the Wake County Health Department, Greg Thomas, a spokesman with the public schools said this morning. The Wake County Heath Department became aware of the case before the school break for the holidays.

Thomas said a student who formerly attended Cary High School transferred to a private school in Wake County. The student became ill, prompting health officials to backtrack in an effort to try and determine the disease’s incubation period.

The backtracking efforts led them to Cary High School, where the student attended four classes.

School officials yesterday, sent letters home to parents whose children were in those four classes, Thomas said. “The health department decided a letter was the best course of action.”
