Medina County auditor offers prizes for ‘Top Dog’ essays
Medina County Auditor Michael E. Kovack has announced the start of the 16th annual Top Dog Contest for all fourth-grade level students in the county.
Dec. 1 marks the beginning of dog licensing season and the Top Dog winners will be announced and awarded their prizes the day before at a special Awards Ceremony held at the Administration Building. Family, friends and, of course, the winning dogs are always invited to the event.
To enter, fourth-grade level students must write an essay explaining why their dog, or a dog they know, is the Top Dog in the County. The subject of the essay must be alive and living in Medina County. Children may design art work for the project, but will be judged on the basis of their essays.

Students should work independently, although parents and teachers may assist them in ensuring the rules are followed. Entry deadline is Nov. 12. Entries should be mailed to Medina County Auditor’s Office, 144 North Broadway, Room 306, Medina, 44256.
The contest is designed to encourage children to improve their writing skills while giving them the opportunity for positive recognition. Local businesses including Bil-Jac, Northland Dairy Queen, Medina Skateland, AMF Bowling Center Medina, Forgotten Animal Shelter and Amazone all donate prizes for the contestants. The top five entries will receive dog licenses numbers 1-5 for their dogs for 2011. The Top Dog and the author will highlight the front cover of the Medina County Auditor’s dog licensing brochure for all of 2011. Every child who submits an essay will receive a coupon for a free ice cream cone from Northland Dairy Queen.
Notices with the contest rules have been sent to all county elementary schools and can be mailed to anyone who requests one. They will also be posted on the auditor’s website, www.medinacountyauditor.org.
