Wake assignment test draws 14,000 hits

Nearly 14,000 Wake County families participated in an online test of a student assignment plan that’s expected to be implemented in the 2012-13 school year.

School officials say 13,805 families went online during the 12-day trial that ended Friday. The trial simulated which among a sample list of schools parents would pick. Wake will use the data to help refine a new student assignment plan that will allow families to choose where they’d like to go instead of being assigned to a specific school on the basis of their address.

Wake is moving toward a controlled-choice plan to replace the discarded method of trying to balance the income levels of students at individual schools.
