Provocative “Girl Store” campaign wins Cannes Lion

Miami Ad School grad Shawna Laken wins her first Lion with innovative pro bono campaign.

Sticking with an idea (when you know it’s good) can definitely pay off. MAS grad & current Strawberry Frog art director Shawna Laken knows this firsthand, because an idea she had over three years ago while on Christmas vacation just won her a Bronze Cyber Lion at Cannes.

“The Girl Store” campaign was created for Project Nanhi Kali, a non-profit aimed at providing underprivileged girls in India with 10 years of quality education, through material & academic support, thus enabling girls to attend school with dignity. Currently, the project supports the education of over 70,000 girls in 9 states in India & has witnessed a significant increase in both enrolments of girls with attendance and learning outcomes improving considerably. The project goal is to reach out 500,000 girls by March 2014.

Laken said the campaign took a year to sell internally and another year to produce, and since it was a pro bono project there were many, many nights and weekends spent on the project. All that hard work has paid off, not only for her but for the many girls whose education will benefit from “The Girl Store.”
