STARTING A FIRE UNDER BIG TOBACCO COMPANIES

Two Miami Ad School students create app, feel the wrath of Phillip Morris

When MAS students Jennine Punzone & Manasvi Abrol created their “Bump a Smoke” app for a portfolio class project, they probably never imagined the idea would actually upset tobacco goliath Phillip Morris or get press coverage on sites like Gawker & AgencySpy- but it did.

The seemingly harmless idea irked the suits at Phillip Morris, because “Bump a Smoke” contained “unauthorized use” of the Marlboro trademark. But, like the crafty young creatives they are, Punzone & Abrol quickly capitalized on the controversy, firing back with their hilarious blog site “We are sorry Phillip Morris.” The site is ripe from top to bottom with ironically backhanded banter, culminating with a thank-you for “Promotion we couldn’t have paid for in cigarettes or any other currency.” Well played.
