Eagles clip Phoenix
The Resurrection Phoenix senior boys basketball squad all but locked up first place in the District 8 standings with a 70-61 loss to the St. Marys Eagles on Wednesday.
Thats right. Loss.
Because Rez won their first meeting by a 62-52 margin on Dec. 1, the Eagles needed to win Round 2 by 11 points to stake a claim to first place in the standings.
Both teams are now 7-1 and the race is far from over, but with upcoming games against Pere Rene, Monsignor Doyle, St. Benedict and Rockway, its unlikely the Phoenix will lose again.
Alex Thompson led the Eagles with 18 points on Wednesday. Adam Voll chipped in with 15, Isaac Lance had 13 and Henry Bankazo had 12.
Mike Pereira had 22 points for the Phoenix, while Cory Kenning added 13.
The undefeated Sir John A. Macdonald Highlanders and Forest Heights Trojans (both 8-0) will face stiff tests this afternoon as they attempt to remain undefeated.
SJAM will take on the Bluevale Knights (6-2) while the Trojans visit the Eastwood Rebels (3-5). Eastwood is a much better team than the record would indicate and is coming off a six-point loss to SJAM on Tuesday.
