Hawks make me look bad
Excuse me for a second while I wipe the egg from my face.
While there’s no shame in picking the wrong team to win a football game, when that team goes out and loses by 40 points . . . that’s just bad.
Sadly for me, that’s exactly what happened on Thursday night under the lights at Jacob Hespeler. Hawks running back Brandon Golding had a four-touchdown outing in leading Jacob (1-1) to a 40-0 win over Southwood (0-2).
I will say I got a bit of bad advice on this one, but it’s my name that goes with the pick, so I’ll take the heat.
WCI (1-1) handed me another setback with an 11-8 win over Elmira (0-2), while St. Mary’s (1-0) did me a favour with a 24-21 win over Waterloo-Oxford (0-2).
So now I’m really interested to see how today’s SJAM-Cameron Heights game turns out as the Highlanders only managed to eke out a 28-20 win over Southwood last week.

A couple of notes from the Waterloo County girls hockey league.
Waterloo-Oxford has asked to drop to Tier 2 this year because the roster is very heavy on Grade 9 players and would likely have a tough go of it against the best teams.
Because of this, convener Bert Udema has put out the call for a volunteer to join Tier 1. Grand River, Forest Heights, Huron Heights, KCI, St. David, WCI and Preston are the candidates.
Southwood, Elmira, Bluevale, Rez, St. Benedict, Jacob Hespeler and SJAM are slotted in Tier 1.
Rules and regulations would need to be changed if a volunteer can’t be found.
Also, it’s hard to notice the list of entries doesn’t include St. Mary’s.
Athletic director Tom Mandich of St. Mary’s told me just two weeks ago that there would be a team.
Stay tuned as I’ve forwarded an email to Udema, asking exactly what’s going on.
