California students improve, but gap remains
The good news from the latest round of standardized test scores is that California students are improving in reading and math.
The bad news is that this state remains a long way from meeting the congressional mandate that all students be at grade-level proficiency by 2014.
Another cause for concern in the results is that the so-called achievement gap remains as entrenched as ever. African American and Latino students scored significantly lower than white students statewide.
San Francisco was one of the bright spots overall – especially in math, with 65 percent at a proficiency level or better – and in narrowing the achievement gap specifically. It was the second straight year that the city showed progress in raising the scores of African American and Latino students.
