Spelling errors in state education presentation

When interim Maryland State School Superintendent Bernard J. Sadusky made a presentation before two House of Delegates committee Friday, he spelled out certain principles for flexibility under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.

Alas, the folks at the Maryland State Department of Education showed a certain flexibility in spelling  “principle” as well. Time for a trip to the principal’s office?

Speedo Champion Series Central Zone Sectional 3 meet gets started at Cleveland State

On the first day of the Speedo Champion Series Central Zone Sectional 3 sectionals at the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium at Cleveland State University, the swimmers were ready to go, despite all of the heat.

One particular swimmer, Austin Quinn, 16, from the Lake Erie Silver Dolphins got a junior nationals cut and came in second (16:11.80) while swimming the 1,500-meter freestyle. Quinn is from Chagrin Falls.

He was joined on the podium of the top eight finishers by 18-year-old teammate Michael Gaudiani (University School graduate from Shaker Heights) who came in third, despite having the top seed going into it. He already had an olympic trial cut (15:47.10) going into the race and ended with a time of 16:18.92 minutes.

Other medalists included: Kevin Stang, Nicholas Crane and Ian Stewart-Bates. A

UNC system will lose $414 million from state

UNC-Chapel Hill’s funding from the state will be reduced by nearly 18 percent – or more than $100 million – making the historic flagship the hardest hit among the UNC system’s 17 campuses.

Reductions will be 15 percent, or $79 million, at N.C. State University, and 14 percent, or $13 million, at N.C. Central University. The UNC system as a whole will be cut $414 million in the fiscal year that started July 1.

The allocations were approved Thursday by the UNC Board of Governors’ budget and finance committee, acting with the authority of the full board.

CCSF’s Fred Sturdivant had a game-high 24 points, 12 rebounds and a key block in the last minute. Lateef McMullan had 23 points for Citrus, including seven 3s. Citrus made 14 3s but was outrebounded, 46-27.
