Gilmour Academy hockey team beats Shaker Heights to reach state semifinals

KENT – The Gilmour Academy hockey team took advantage of its opportunities to defeat Shaker Heights, 4-0, in a district final Friday night at Kent State University.

The Lancers will be making their second trip to the state semifinals in school history as they will take on the winner of the St. Edward-Padua Franciscan game at 3 p.m. March 12 in a state semifinal game.

GA is now 35-8-2 while the Raiders’ season ends at 27-5.

GA got goals from John Tobbe, Matt Grider, Andrew Krall and an empty netter from Chris Deming.

Oliver Flesher earned the shutout in goal for the Lancers.

Gilmour Academy boys golf team wins Division III state championship

The Gilmour Academy boys golf team won its first state championship since 1994 as the Lancers were led by co-medalist Alex Andrews at the Division III state tournament at the NorthStar Golf Resort in Sunbury.

The Lancers finished 22 strokes ahead of runner up Toledo Ottawa Hills. GA finished with a team total of 634 while Ottawa Hills finished with 656. GA won four straight state championships from 1991-94, which is still a state record. GA coach Charlie Tremont said the Lancers have focused on that goal for quite some time.

Matter of fact, it started when the Lancers returned from the state tournament last season after finishing fourth in the state.

Report: Ed official on ‘both sides’ of deal, but didn’t defraud state

St. Paul, Minn. — An investigation into the state’s former Deputy Education Commissioner, Chas Anderson, has found she broke some conflict-of-interest rules in procuring herself a contract, but clears her of more egregious allegations that she tried to defraud the state.

Chas Anderson ranked second only to Commissioner Alice Seagren at the Minnesota Department of Education before her resignation in June.

The state’s Management and Budget Office investigated Anderson this summer to see if she had improperly procured herself a contract as she left her state position. Anderson had signed a $5,000 contract with the department to help write an application for a federal grant under a program called TIF, Teacher Incentive Fund. The contract was never executed. <

Larry Aceves for state schools chief

One of the big surprises in the June primary was the first-place finish of Larry Aceves, a former teacher, principal and superintendent, over two veteran legislators in the race for state superintendent of public instruction.

Aceves now faces a November run-off against Assemblyman Tom Torlakson, a Democrat who has been a fixture in Contra Costa County politics since his election to the Antioch City Council in 1978.

Torlakson, a former science teacher, has made education a point of focus during his tenure in the Legislature. He supports innovation to a degree. But when it comes to reforms that might rankle the teacher unions – such as loosening seniority as the sole criteria for layoffs, or using class test scores as one of the elements in evaluating teacher performance – Torlakson routinely sides with the status quo.
