Sorority Pledging: Things to Look Out For
Going to college can be exciting and while you may be tempted to live off campus, you may find yourself joining a frat house. While it can be a great experience, there are a lot of them out there that are going to do a lot more harm than good.
If you’re thinking about pledging to a certain sorority, there are probably a few things that you want to look out for because the last thing that you want to happen to you is this.
Evaluate the house
Why do you want to join this house? What do you see in this house and why do you want to join? You really don’t want to join if you have a friend there, or because it’s simply, “cool.” The last thing that you want to do is get into trouble with late night partying.
Does it feel like a home?
You’re going to be living at this place, so make a good decision. If you really want to join a sorority house, you will want a place that feels like a home. Do you really want to study in a place that parties 24 hours a day? Remember, you’re going to college to better yourself and while it’s tempting to party every day of the week, it’s not going to get you anywhere.
Would you feel comfortable?
You really want to trust your gut the first time you walk into one. Yes, some houses will probably make you do some silly things, but there are some great houses out there that don’t make you go through all of the madness. Trust your instincts when you first walk into one to catch the vibe.
Never commit on day one
A great house is going to let you try the place out. Try it out for a day, or even a week and see how you like it. If you like it enough, commit to the house full time after. If the house makes your commit on day one, I would run fast!
Respect yourself
Find out what the sorority means on campus. The last thing that you want is a bad name on campus. If people think poorly of the place, stay away from it, as this can hurt many opportunities on your campus. A great way to get a vibe of the place is simply by asking or even doing a little research online.
While attending a house like this is an option, don’t go just because you feel forced to. Instead, explore your options and always choose what is best for you and your future.
